Excerpts from a press release
Brookside Press announces the publication of the Fourth Edition of The Piano Book: Buying &
Owning a New or Used Piano, by Larry Fine. Sporting a red cover (each edition is popularly known by its color), and twenty-five percent longer than the previous edition, the Fourth Edition is the first major revision of this consumer bible in six years.
In addition to the usual candid reviews of new pianos based on thousands of technician reports, highlights of the new, expanded edition include: extensive rewriting of the section on shopping for a new piano, addressing such topics as the piano as an investment, trade-ins, pvice vs. service, and shopping on the internet; an expanded rating system for new pianos to more closely reflect the subtle ways in which pianos differ in quality; more extensive coverage of electronic player piano systems; addressing the issue of gray-market Japanese pianos; greater coverage of rebuilding issues, especially pertaining to older Steinway pianos; a complete revision of the table of used-piano market values; a new list of Steinway serial numbers and dates, different from previous versions; and information on room acoustics.
Published simultaneously with the Fourth Edition is the 2000-2001 Annual Supplement to The Piano Book, which contains current "list prices" for over 2,500 models of new pianos, as well as advice on how to estimate "street prices."
